Our Early Learning Programme

Building strong foundations for lifelong learning

At Early Bird Daycare, we believe that every child is unique and learns best when they feel safe, loved, encouraged and actively involved in their learning environment.

Our preschool programme is designed around the six Early Learning and Development Areas (ELDAs) of the South African National Curriculum Framework. These areas support the holistic development of each child through age-appropriate activities, guided learning, play, exploration, creativity and everyday experiences.

Our programme is designed to help children develop the confidence, knowledge, skills and independence they need as they progress towards Grade R and beyond.

💙 1. WELL-BEING

Healthy bodies. Happy minds. Confident children.

We help children develop healthy habits and an understanding of how to care for themselves and others.

Our activities encourage:

  • Gross and fine motor development

  • Physical movement and coordination

  • Healthy eating habits

  • Personal hygiene and self-care

  • Emotional expression

  • Confidence and independence

  • Safe behaviour

  • Rest, relaxation and emotional well-being

We want every child to feel safe, valued and confident to participate.

🐦 2. IDENTITY & BELONGING

Helping every child discover who they are.

Children need to understand that they are important, valued and part of a community.

Through stories, conversations, activities and group experiences, children learn about:

  • Their names and personal identity

  • Their families

  • Feelings and emotions

  • Friendship

  • Sharing and caring

  • Respect for others

  • Different cultures and backgrounds

  • Responsibility and independence

  • Belonging to their school and community

We encourage children to develop a positive sense of themselves and respect for others.

📚 3. COMMUNICATING

Finding their voice and learning to express themselves.

Communication is an essential foundation for learning.

Our programme provides opportunities for children to develop:

  • Listening skills

  • Speaking and conversation

  • Vocabulary

  • Storytelling

  • Rhymes and songs

  • Pre-reading skills

  • Recognition of sounds and letters

We encourage children to speak, listen, ask questions, tell stories and express themselves confidently.

Making mathematics part of everyday life.

Young children learn mathematics through practical experiences and play.

We introduce age-appropriate concepts such as:

  • Counting

  • Number recognition

  • Matching

  • Sorting

Children are encouraged to explore mathematics through games, puzzles, construction, movement, stories and everyday classroom activities.

🎨 5. CREATIVITY

Imagine. Create. Explore.

Creativity gives children the opportunity to express themselves and discover new ways of thinking.

Our creative programme includes:

  • Drawing

  • Colouring

  • Cutting and pasting

  • Music

  • Singing

We don't simply focus on the finished product. We value the child's imagination, effort, exploration and enjoyment of the creative process.

🌍 6. KNOWLEDGE & UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD

Helping little minds discover the world around them.

Children are naturally curious. We encourage them to ask questions, investigate and discover how the world around them works.

Our activities introduce children to:

  • Seasons

  • Our community

  • Families and different cultures

  • People and occupations

  • Technology

  • Everyday objects

  • Basic science and discovery

Through observation, exploration, practical activities and discussion, children begin to make sense of the world around them.

🌟 LEARNING THROUGH PLAY

At Early Bird Daycare, play is an important part of learning.

Children learn by doing, exploring, asking questions, experimenting, creating and interacting with others. South Africa's ECD approach places strong emphasis on play-based learning and holistic development.

Our teachers use everyday activities and structured learning experiences to help children develop across all six ELDAs.

We don't just prepare children for school.

We help prepare them for life.
